“If You Love, You Suffer. If You Don’t Love, You Get Sick.”

"If you love, you suffer. If you don't love, you get sick."

The saying “If you love, you suffer. If you don’t love, you get sick,” is one of Sigmund Freud’s most popular sayings. The statement was included in his ‘Zur Einführung des Narzißmus’ (‘Introducing Narcissism’) and is now circulating on all social networks. Many find the statement romantic, but in reality it is much more than that.

Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis have been questioned very often. The most common criticism is that it is ‘not scientific’. Nevertheless, many of Freud’s theories have greatly influenced the humanities, including rigorous disciplines such as psychiatry.
