That alcohol is a way to forget about your problems is still a popular belief. However, it is time to put an end to this myth. Drinking to forget is a terrible and pointless idea. Not only is it very harmful to your body, it is also completely ineffective. This psychoactive drug does not help you to forget bad experiences. It does the complete opposite. New scientific discoveries show that alcohol helps to perpetuate events in your memory. You cannot change the things you have experienced. Alcohol does not help to forget.

Alcohol is a chemical that has effects on the body. Those effects change as time goes by. It affects many neurotransmitter systems and brain structures. Alcohol overwhelms the central nervous system. It causes serious health problems in the short, medium and long term. How exactly does alcohol affect us?

Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) is a drug that quickly enters the bloodstream. In addition, the cell membranes have a very high alcohol permeability. So this means that these molecules pass through these membranes very easily. Once the alcohol is in the bloodstream, it spreads easily through any body tissue.

Alcohol takes between 30 and 90 minutes to reach the bloodstream after ingestion. This drug speeds up the conversion of glycogen into glucose. The glucose is then removed more quickly. As a result, blood sugar levels drop. This makes you feel weak and exhausted.

When you drink an alcoholic drink, the effects don’t show immediately. This is because alcohol affects us in a biphasic way. That means in two phases that also cause completely opposite symptoms.

Initially you experience relaxation, joy and euphoria. You lose your inhibitions. Over time and depending on the amount of alcohol and when you took a drink, other effects can occur. These can be, for example, blurred vision, dizziness and coordination problems. Why is this happening?

How does alcohol affect the brain?

Alcohol acts on the central nervous system as a powerful sedative. This means that it slows down brain activity and movement of the spine. It acts on countless systems including the reticular formation, cerebral cortex and cerebellum. It is believed that alcohol affects the brain in three stages:

  • First, alcohol affects the most primitive and front part of the brain – the forebrain. This weakens both motor coordination and the decision-making process.
  • Then it attacks the midbrain. This means that you lose the ability to control your emotions. You are also more likely to lose consciousness.
  • Finally, it hits the brainstem. It affects heart rate, body temperature, appetite and consciousness. At this stage, the body can go into a comatose state.

As you can see, excessive alcohol consumption causes loss of consciousness. If usage is extremely high, even death is possible from ethyl alcohol poisoning or from cardiac arrest. Alcohol does not help to forget, it only damages.

The misconception that alcohol acts as an antidepressant

Many people resort to alcohol when they feel depressed. They then think that using alcohol will help them stop the feelings of deep sadness, but alcohol does not help. Since it has an inhibitory effect on the brain, it ensures that people are no longer aware of their own mood. They then enter a state where they do not feel pain, sadness and anger. This makes alcohol an attractive drug,  especially for people who are emotionally vulnerable.

A study was recently published in the journal  Translational Psychiatry  . This study stated that excessive alcohol consumption not only does not erase memories. Alcohol even supports memory retention. Drinking alcohol in moderation is not good for the body. However, if science proves it doesn’t work the way some people think,  drinking is even less worth it.

The long-term effects of alcohol consumption are truly disastrous. Drinking regularly can damage every organ in the body.

  • It causes damage to the frontal lobe of the brain. Alcohol consumption even leads to a decrease in brain size and brain volume.
  • Alcohol also promotes the non-absorption of thiamine (vitamin B1). This substance contributes to the oxygenation of the brain and to the conversion of glucose. These conditions can lead to what is known as Wernike’s syndrome, encephalopathy and eventually Korsakoff’s syndrome.
  • In addition to this serious brain damage, it also affects peripheral nerves. This leads to irreversible consequences.
  • Alcohol disrupts the processing of new information. It also affects a person’s visuospatial functioning.
  • What is common is that drinking too much can cause serious sleep disturbances.
  • It also lowers libido or causes infertility and erectile dysfunction.
  • Alcohol leads to severe levels of dehydration. It stops the body from making white and red blood cells. This causes anemia and memory changes that vary in length.
  • Alcohol raises blood pressure. In turn, high blood pressure can seriously damage the heart muscle and weaken it. The heart then loses the ability to properly pump blood to each part of the body.
  • Ethanol irritates the organs and causes numerous diseases such as hepatitis or cirrhosis. In addition, it is so toxic that it can cause stomach cancer, throat cancer, esophageal cancer or cancer of the pancreas.

Despite all these effects, alcohol is a legal drug in almost every country in the world, with the exception of Islamic countries. So keep in mind how this psychoactive substance affects your brain and organs. Also remember: alcohol will not help. It is your responsibility to limit your alcohol consumption.
